in 2008 we knew it as the MOTOR INN. everyone stayed at the motor inn. i remember riding most of the 20km bike between packs that year. i raced in matt vierula's kiwami suit. uniform rules had just come into effect. i remember a 6th place finish and crossing the line to see a huge smile on mark okany's face. and i remember lowell. if you don't, you weren't there when we went door to door singing happy birthday to strangers with a DQ cake, or when he performed a pirate themed musical by himself at the PEI test event, complete with backflips and multiple character portrayals.
in 2010 this hotel had been revamped with a new name: the INN & SUITES. i do not recall any significant renovations, but the name change was enough to attract a couple new faces for at least one night. another 'learning oppourtunity' in T1 gave me a repeat of my 6th place finish of 2 years before. new triathletes had come, some had gone, but a core group of about 10 guys celebrated their final race as a junior in style: by walking 40 minutes to the bar, deciding the wait was too long, and walking home to grab snacks at metro instead.
2011 has come and i now wait until sunday to compete. according to the okanagan shuttle service, this place is now also known as the KELOWNA HOSTEL. i give it more credit than that with the free wifi, breakfast, trendy upper level lofts and prices that do not coincide with what i know most hostels to charge their occupants. twice the distance this year, a couple 2012 olympians to toe the line with, a decent hill that we rep 6 times... lots to look forward to.
travelling to kelowna is the closest thing i know to time travel. with the 3 hour time difference my sleep cycle readjusts to that of a working man. as much as the hay is in the barn, i'd like to put in some volume over the next few days. i'm eating too much to last this taper in a lean condition. off to the pool.
